A New Venture: After Daybreak

The new pop/classical trio After Daybreak is about to release their debut album on November 9th, and I'm in it! I became involved when producer/manger Andrew Bunel with Bandhouse Music Group contacted me out of the blue back in February of this year after having heard my album on CDBaby.com and asked if I was interested in being in this trio. After liking his plans and all he had to say I told him I was in. The other members are David Fritch and Drew Boushka and we all by pure coincidence lived in the same area of Utah at that time! What are the odds of that!? We started rehearsing together in April and recorded 6 songs that comprise the debut mini-album in May. After a couple of months of nothing, we all got together at the end of August in Nashville to shoot the music video for our first single, "What a Wonderful World." Now we are heavy into promotion in preparation for the album release date of November 9, 2010 on iTunes and Amazon.com. These next few entries are video clips from the making of our music video for "What a Wonderful World." You can stay tuned here, or the After Daybreak facebook page, OR the After Daybreak website, OR my facebook page, OR my website to watch things unfold to see if After Daybreak becomes the next big thing. Long time no blog. What is up with that? Well, I'll tell you. It's been a fun and busy summer. I've done a lot of private performances for Youth Conferences and girl's camps. A big chunk of the summer was spent getting our house ready to sell so we can move to the Sacramento area of California with my day job. No, we haven’t sold the home and moved yet – still in Utah. I've also spent some time getting ready for my next big project as a member of the new pop classical trio "After Daybreak." We've made a mini-album of 6 songs that will release on iTunes and Amazon.com on November 9th. I'll blog about that some tim in the next week as I will need everyone's help with promotion on that if you are game!

For now I want to let you all know that I'll be doing a concert at the SCERA Center Theatre on October 23rd. It's my first time performing as a headliner there and hope you will come. I'll be joined by my dear friend and superstar Jessie Funk who will sing some songs from her AWESOME new album "Dance in the Rain" and she will of course join me for a number or two.

Liken fans don't miss this!: Jonah and the Great Fish, live on stage!

Perhaps you are a Liken fan, perhaps you've never seen a Liken the Scritpures DVD, but here is a performance you will want to see if you are in the area of Orem, Utah Feb 5 through the 15th. I've had the fun opportunity to be in 4 films in the Liken the Scriptures DVD series produced between 2004 and 2006. When the economy changed production on any new projects had to stop for awhile. So here we are, after an entire three year absence, Liken's next DVD is first hitting the stage at the SCERA Centre Theatre in Orem, UT.

The cast that you will see on stage is the cast that you will see on the DVD. They are performing for the public at night and filming the musical portions of the DVD during the day over the course of the stage run.

I'm the one exception that will not be seen in the musical portion of the dvd. As you can see I have several other performing obligations over the course of the stage run and had counted myself out of the Jonah oppotrunity because of them. But the producers of Liken still called and said they wanted me to be the father of the modern day girl who is imagining the story of Jonah on the nights I'm available. Yahoo!!

So I'll also be in the stage production on the following nights: Feb 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15 and I'm so excited to be reunited with some great friends - David Osmond as Jonah, Katherine Nelson as the Queen, J. Michael Bailey as The Capitan, and Jared Young as a leader of a gang of wicked Ninevites. The entire cast is phenomenal! And....even though I have a non-singing role in the production, it doesn't necessarily mean I won't be singing on the nights I'm there. (tease, tease)

Choral Music is for Lovers with Jenny Jordan Frogley and Daniel Beck

Last summer I had the privelege of singing on the Kent Theater Stage at USU in Logan, UT with Craig Jessop's American Festival Chorus and orchestra. I shared the stage with Maureen McGovern and got to meet her and it was one of my favorite performing experiences of the year. So I'm thrilled to be asked back to Logan to perform with the incredible Jenny Jordan Frogley for this concert.

Daniel Beck sing at "The Cultural Event of the Year in Clayton, Idaho."

So I'm home sick today and thought I would blog about one of my recent concerts. Back in September, Sharon May, who with her husband Paul, are owners and operators of the May Family Ranch near the town of Clayton, Idaho, invited me to do a little concert one evening since we would be spending a few days there for our family vacation. She said that she wanted to invite a few friends to hear me sing. I agreed because, hey, I'm a singer, it's what I do.

Well, not only did the whole town of Clayton turn out, people came from all the surrounding areas and we had pretty much almost double the population of Clayton out to what Sharon had been billing as, "The Cultural Eevent of the Year for Clayton, Idaho." It was a fun concert and the people there are wonderful. It was a great event that just gives further evidence that my star is definitely rising and I'm inching inevitably closer to becoming a huge star.......in Clayton, Idaho. Thank you Sharon and Paul! Here's a bit of a teaser, I just recorded a lead vocal for the 2010 EFY cd. The song is one you may have heard of before called, "Lord, I Would Follow Thee" and was arranged by none other than Michael Hicks! I have yet to hear the final product but when I recorded it I meant every word I sang and hope that comes through in the recording to match the amazing arrangement.

Kids On the Move Family Night Benefit Concert

Hey folks, my next public performance is one that you don't want to miss! This is a benefit concert for Kids On The Move at the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre, Monday August 31st at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $15 for a family and $5 for an individual and can be purchased in advance at any Macey's grocery store or at the Kids On The Move Offices at 475 W 260 N in Orem (ticket prices go up if purchased at the door) and all proceeds benefit Kids On The Move. Kids On The Move is a non-profit organization that was started 25 years ago by 2 angel mothers who each had a child with Down syndrome and found that there was no community support or programs for those with children with development delays and learning disabilities. So Kids On The Move was born and today they provide support, therapy, and education for families with children birth to age 3 with learning disabilities. They also provide early education for children brith to age 3 from low-income families and do so for thousands of families annually. Help keep this amazing and necessary program strong by coming to this concert and bringing everyone you can.

I'll be performing with Joshua Creek, Holly Robbins, and Dyer Highway with the phenomenal entertainer Jason Hewlett as the MC. This will be a great show for a great cause so let's fill the place!!! Sold Out Crowds at BYU Education Week

Just a quick post to say thanks to Dallyn Vail Bayles who gave me the thrill and privilege of performing in two sold out concerts with him this last week at BYU Education Week. Dallyn is currently in the Broadway touring company of "Phantom of the Opera." Dallyn had been booked by the Education Week committee to do 4 concerts this last week so he took time out from the tour to do so.

He did two concert's (Wed, and Fri) based on his Pearl Award winning album "Prayer." And on Tuesday and Thursday he did an Inspirational Broadway concert that I got to participate in. I sure loved the Education Week crowd which consisted of people from all over the country. Thank you again Dallyn and best of luck in all you do!!! Go get 'em!! Daniel Beck voted New Artist of the Year by LDS Booksellers Association

The first part of August of every year all the independent LDS bookstore owners and employees from all over the US and Canada that make up the LDS Booksellers Association come together here in Utah for a convention. During this time they get to see new products that are available or will soon be available to sell.

Wednesday night August 5th I participated in a musical showcase with some artists from Sounds of Zion and Positive Music and Downloads. I performed "Love Like That" and "Amazing Grace" for the good folks that go out and try to sell our music. Other artists that performed were Sam Payne, Jessie Clark Funk, Marvin Goldstein, One Clear Voice, Mitch Hansen, Cherie Call, and in the coolest and most surreal moment of the evening, Kevin Peay and Joel McCausland, better known to the world as Afterglow, who sat next to my wife and I, performed as part of an announcement and promotion for their new cd that is coming soon.

Thursday August 6th, the LDSBA had a banquet and awards program that I was honored to attend because I have been voted by the LDSBA as the New Artist of the Year and received the award at the banquet. It's a beautiful award and am thrilled to receive it. Thank you to the LDSBA, Gaylen Rust and his crew, and Kenneth Cope who produced my album, and who, coincidentally, was name the Male Artist of the year by the LDSBA on the same night. How cool is that?!

Daniel Beck Hoping to Contribute to a Wonderful Education Week at BYU-Idaho

This Thursday, July 30 at 7:30 pm I'll be singing at the Kirkham Auditorium at BYU-Idaho in Rexburg, Idaho as part of Education Week. I'll be joined on the stage by local favorite Missy Babcock. She's a native of New York who has lived in Rexburg for quite a few years and has performed many concerts there in the Rexburg area specializing in jazz standards. Our concert is billed as, "An Evening With Daniel Beck and Missy Babcok - Education Week Concert." How's that for a long title? But I guess it works!

Missy has put together a live band to accompany us as we perform a bunch of great songs from the great American Songbook, Broadway, and some other favorites. I'm really excited for this concert. American Radio Cafe closes early, but hopefully not for good!

I can hardly begin to tell you how much fun I had with "The American Radio Cafe." Mike Leavitt, Joey Haughey, and Don Parker put together a great show. Unfortunately we didn't have enough people willing to take a chance on a new show and concept and the show had to close early. The live music, Jarrett Burns, the bluegrass group Firefly, the comedy bits, live commercials and cartoons were all on fire. (By the way, Jarrett Burns is one to watch folks! His music is wonderful!!) Those who came really loved the whole concept and show and responded very enthusiastically. So the last night the tickets were free, the house was full for a taping of the show that the show's producers will use to convince future investors of its awesomeness and perhaps at a later date we will see ARC again. The show was so incredibly fun and I hope I get to do it again. Here are some pictures from backstage. I'll have to post some pictures from the audience view when I get them.

So be watching for the Cafe doors to be open again in the future and don't miss it when they are!!!

Live Musical Variety Show Brings New Life to Old-Time Radio Programs

Bob Hope, Red Skelton, and Jack Benny Come to Life

Provo, UT – June 12th, Bringing back the charm and wit of Old-Time Radio programs, The American Radio Café is a live musical variety show that combines the comedy of the radio programs and cartoons of the Early Broadcast Era with modern day talent. The Show will feature local artists Kirby Heybourne and Daniel Beck along with American Idol Hollywood Week performer Jarrett Burns and the group The Fireflies. Performances will be June 25th through July 4th at the Covey Center for the Arts in Downtown Provo, UT.

The American Radio Café was the brainchild of local musician and producer Michael Leavitt. By showcasing talented performers in a variety-show format, Leavitt successfully captures the warmth and musicality of the radio shows of yesteryear with a modern twist.

“I’ve always admired the ability of radio performers from the 40’s and 50’s who were able to captivate an audience with just their musical talent and supreme acting abilities,” said Leavitt, producer and director of the American Radio Café. “By bringing together some of the best vocal talent, instrumental accompaniment and stunning visual elements, we’re able to give people a taste of the old-time radio charm, but with a modern flavor.”

Kirby Heybourne, star of films such as Saints and Soldiers, The RM, and The Best Two Years, has just released the album The Elm Tree and will be the host of the show from the 1st through the 4th of July. In addition, up and coming vocalist Daniel Beck – touted as Utah’s Josh Groban— who just released his debut album Love Like That, will host the show the 25th through the 29th of June.

The American Radio Café features a five piece American Radio Jukebox Band and the 22 piece American Radio Orchestra. The first act of the show is patterned after the Carol Burnett show, which will feature Heybourne and Beck performing original numbers, live skits and commercials. The hosts will also perform alongside classic films and cartoons, bringing back the feel of Old Time Radio with the flavor of today’s modern appeal.

I mean look at these pictures! From the top: Miss Utah 2008 Kayla Barclay and I, 2008 Miss Provo Allie Edgington and I, and the one who stole the crown right out from under me - Heather Sabin, the new Miss Provo (pictured here with me and my own little beauty queen Madison Beck), and Jackie Tohn and I. Just looking at them you can tell I just didn't even have a chance to win had I been the first male ever to compete in the Miss Provo Miss America Scholarship pageant. Had a blast at the pageant. Chatted it up back stage with Jackie Tohn who also performed. She's VERY cool. All the contestants were brilliant. Congratulations Heather, and thank you ladies! You're all A-MA-ZA-ING!!

George, Jenny, and I were accompanied by some thunder and lightning and enough rain to get our audience wet, but the show went on! Nearly 1200 people braved the weather to come out on Friday night for the George Ddyer and Friends concert. We were in the middle of singing "Standing on the Corner" in the second half when in perfect time a thunder clap sounded right as we started a verse. While it gave that verse a special kick that you can't duplicate in any studio, it was big enough that some people got up and headed for cover, but many stayed to the end. Whether you left part way through or stayed to the end, thanks for coming on out. I've never been to the Sandy Ampitheater before and think that the facility was fantastic and I would love to perform there again.

The Results Are In: The Marvin Goldstein Concert Was a Blast!!

Just a quick post with some pictures from the big show last Saturday night. Marvin was in rare form and so fun to be with. He accompanied about 20 different numbers along with doing his own thing. Man! that guy can play AND entertain. Sam Payne said it best before the show - Marvin has a unique ability to make each performer who performed with him on Saturday night think that they were his absolute favorite. I hope I can grow up to be like him. And congrats Sam on bringing it in just under 3 hours. No small feat considering how many numbers there were. Enjoy a few photos.

Daniel Beck Actually Not Competing in Miss Provo Pageant this Saturday.......just a guest artist thing.

Well just after that last post I received an email clarifying my role in the Miss Provo Pageant this Saturday. So they didn't let me down very easily when they told me that I would most definitely NOT be competing. But instead they are having me sing for a few minutes at the end of the competition while the judges scores are tallied and right before they announce the new Miss Provo royalty.

So while I don't have a shot at the crown (would it really have stayed on my hairless head anyway?) I'm thrilled to be with the amazing gals of Provo singing and doing my thing while they nervously await the results. Daniel Beck Competing in Miss Provo this Saturday Night!!

Yes it's true! They called me and asked me to be in the Miss Provo Pageant this year!! So this Saturday night I'll be at the Covey Center Theater, competing in such categories as evening wear, talent, interview, and the one I'm most excited about - swimwear! Aaaaaahhh! (note to self: get back waxed). I think I'm the most nervous about being the only male in the competition. Rumor has it, I'm the first male ever to compete in any Miss America Scholarship pageant in the entire history of the Miss America Scholarship pageant! I'm really excited to just flip this thing on it's head and break new ground in the world of men's rights! (If you could see me as I'm typing this, you would see me with one fist HIGH in the air)

Broadway and More: George Dyer and Friends this Friday

Here's the story of how this show came to be. Sandy City Arts was going to do 3 nights of "West Side Story" in concert this weekend starring George Dyer as Tony and yours truly as Riff, but it turned out that although I'm sure Sandy Arts had done all their homework, crossed the t's and dotted the i's apparently there was some miscommunication and the stage rights to a concert version of "West Side Story" actually are not available. So with about 1000 tickets sold already, Sandy came up with the idea of doing a George and friends concert and kept me on as one of the friends and also brought in the phenom Jenny Jordan Frogley.

There will be a live band, George will chew up the stage as will Jenny. I'm gonna do my best to do the same singing "She Was There" from The Scarlet Pimpernel, "Lily's Eyes" from The Secret Garden with George. Jenny, George and I will combine for a trio rendition of "The Impossible Dream" and launch into some fun with "Standing on the Corner" from Most Happy Fella. Marvin Goldstein: 50 Years of Performing is sold out!!!

I know that title makes it sound like I had something to do with the show selling out, but I didn't. 50 years of performing makes you a legend so it's all Marvin, and I'm oh so totally stoked to be on stage with a legend. I'll be singing "The Prayer" with the amazing Jessie Clark Funk with Marvin accompanying on piano as well as performing with about 36 other artists on another big finale song. New Website Has Launched!!

As if you didn't know that already...because you most likely got here from the new website. This blog is SO new that if you are reading this within a week of May 21st, you are likely one of the FIRST to do so! In fact, this is so new and as yet un-advertised that if you are reading this within a MONTH of May 21, 2009, you could STILL, quite possibly, be one of the first!! Lucky you!
